What is Grip Tape Used For?

Grip tape is a kind of sandpaper that helps you stick to your skateboard and tackle those tricks. Grip tape is an essential component of a skateboard, its purpose is to provide traction and grip for the skater's feet. This is crucial for maintaining stability and control for riding and performing tricks, jumps, and turns.

In addition to its practical function, grip tape gives your skateboard personality. You can personalise your board with different grip tape designs, colours, and patterns to showcase your individual style and creativity.

Overall, grip tape is a vital component of skateboarding, providing the necessary traction for performing tricks and a way to express your personality and originality.

How to Apply Skateboard Grip Tape

To apply skateboard grip tape, start by measuring the length and width of your skateboard deck to ensure the grip tape will fit properly. After cleaning the deck surface, carefully peel the backing off the grip tape and align it over the board.

Use a sweeping motion to lay the grip tape down, making sure it adheres smoothly and without air bubbles. A good tip is to start from the centre and work your way outwards, pressing the grip tape firmly onto the deck. Once the grip tape is in place, use the blunt edge of the utility knife or a skate tool to score around the edges, giving you a cutting guide. Place the deck grip side up on the edge of a table or bench and with one hand on top of the deck to hold it secure, insert a knife from underneath the grip, against the edge of the deck. Pull the knife towards you, pushing against the deck edge as a guide. Keep rotating the deck as you pull the knife around the edge of the deck. When you have cut away all the excess grip, you can use an offcut of the grip to sand down the edges of the grip to ensure good ahesion to the deck around the edges.

Properly applying and securing the grip tape is crucial for providing traction and stability while riding your skateboard. Without a secure grip tape, the board can become slippery and increase the risk of accidents. By following these steps, you can ensure that your skateboard grip tape is applied correctly and securely for a smooth and safe ride.

How to Remove Old Grip Tape

To remove old grip tape, start by removing the trucks. Then, find a heat source, such as a hairdryer. Use the heat source to warm up the grip tape, making it easier to peel off. Next, use a sharp object like a flat razor blade to lift one corner of the grip tape. Slowly and carefully peel back the grip tape, applying more heat if necessary to loosen any stubborn adhesive. Once the grip tape is completely removed, use metho to remove any leftover adhesive. Apply some adhesive remover or rubbing alcohol to clean off any residue left on the surface. Finally, allow the surface to dry before applying the new grip tape.

When Should I Replace My Grip Tape?

It is important to replace grip tape when it shows signs of wear and tear, such as loss of grip and the visibility of dirt and wear marks. As the grip tape wears down, it becomes less effective in providing the necessary traction for your feet. Additionally, when the grip tape starts to become slippery or begins to peel off, it is time to consider replacing it. These are clear indicators that the grip tape is no longer providing the necessary grip and control, which can lead to accidents and injuries while riding. Keeping an eye on the functionality of the grip tape is crucial for maintaining a safe and enjoyable riding experience.
